Edgar Allen Poe

Edgar Allen Poe was born in Boston on December 19, 1809 as Edgar Poe. He died on October 3, 1849 at just age 40. Poe was abandoned by his father when Poe was 1, and his mother died the next year. Poe was taken in by John and Frances Allan from Richmond, Virginia. In 1825, Poe became engaged to Sarah Elmira Royster before attending the University of Virginia. Royster was just 15 years old. Upon graduation, Poe learned that Royster had married Alexander Shelton. Poe no longer felt welcome in Richmond and moved back to Boston. Poe became a West Point cadet on July 1, 1830. Poe was expelled from West Point the next year on charges of neglect of duty and failure to follow orders. There are 13 theories about Poe's death. Some of these theories include: heart disease, syphilis, cholera, rabies, and epilepsy. The "Poe Toaster" is an unknown visitor paid homage at Poe's grave annually beginning in 1949.
